Quarterly Meeting of the Golden Triangle Baptist Church
January 18, 2010
Southside Baptist Church, Port Neches, TX
Moderator Joe Worley called the meeting to order. David Birdsong, Pastor of Southside Baptist Church, extended a welcome and opened in prayer focusing on the situation in Haiti.
T. J. Bordelon, Pastor of Cove Baptist Church, shared words of gratitude for the assistance that Cove Baptist Church received in rebuilding the church. They are not quite finished with all the work and will soon have a Celebration Service and everyone is welcomed to attend.
Joe Worley announced the Engage Conference being held February 17th at First Baptist Church, Groves. A flyer for the conference detailing the break-out sessions was enclosed in today’s hand-outs. He encouraged the churches to not only attend but also to invite one of the guest speakers to speak at their church on that Wednesday night.
Joe Worley then presented the minutes as enclosed in the hand-out and they were approved as written.
Raymond McHenry presented the financial report. He referred to page 6 of the hand-out where YTD Actual Total Revenues equaled $325,193.53; then on page 7, the YTD Actual Total Expenditures totaled $302,437.56. He brought attention to Account 8002 the Clearing Account were there is currently $45,136.23 which is the account where our excess money is stored. The Total Fund Principal and Excess Cash Received total $65,795.23.
The Finance Committee would like $25,000 to go to the Haiti endeavor splitting it 50-50 with the International Mission Board and Texas Baptist Men. A question was asked just clarifying that it would be split 50-50 between these two organizations. The recommendation passed unanimously. Raymond encouraged all present to go back to their churches and make sure they are aware of the support our association is giving for this need. He also encouraged any giving be done through the association so that we can look back at a later date and see exactly how much money the churches in the Golden Triangle Association gave towards the Haiti relief.
Raymond also drew attention to Page 11 of the hand-out showing the amount the individual churches gave, asking each church to evaluate where their church stood in its giving to the Association.
Larry Perkins brought the motion to elect Yvonne McBryde as clerk. Yvonne is replacing Sharron Gatch who retired in December. The motion was approved.
Scott McIntosh, Mission Committee Chairman, read a motion from that committee: “That the Golden Triangle Baptist Association receive the Cowboy Church of Hardin County, pastor Robert Smith, under Mission Status. It would receive $500 a month support for the first twelve months, $350 a month for months 13 through 24, then $200 a month for months 25 through 36 for a total of $12,600. Their primary sponsor is the First Baptist Church of Nederland. These are budgeted funds.”
Bro. Jim Salles questioned why we are moving into Hardin County since it is not a part of our Association. Larry Perkins responded that the sponsoring church is based in our association and there is a possibility that it would not stay in Hardin County. Also asked was how long the church had been meeting to which was answered 2 or 3 months. The recommendation passed with 1 dissenting vote.
Steve Dollar, representing the Property Reinvestment Task Force came forward to present 2 motions from that committee. He first explained how the committee came about in 2006 when the previous building was sold and a task force was formed to determine how to move forward. After meeting throughout the next year and surveying the pastors and staff, they made a motion to build a permanent facility in Beaumont. The process seem to move slow, they looked at several locations that had been offered as a donation to the association but nothing seemed right and of course 2 hurricanes interrupted the process. Now, Dawndale Baptist Church has offered the association up to 1 acre of land next to their church on Folsom on which to build a facility. (See Attached Motion)
The question was asked if this would allow sufficient space for parking as well. Steve answered yes. Initial plans had been discussed with an architect from the BGCT and the area would allow for a building of a minimum of 4,000 square feet and still allow for plenty of parking. Steve then briefly pointed out points 1-4 of the motion. Point number 2 states that GTBA will maintain the grounds of the entire property. Steve explained that during the course of this previous year their groundskeeper had a stroke and is unable to continue to do the necessary work. Point number 3 states that Dawndale Baptist Church will have the Right of First Refusal in the event that the association were to offer to sell the property and a say as to whom the property would be sold. The questions was then asked if the Golden Triangle Baptist Association would have any say in the event that Dawndale ceased to be a church and would try to sell or lease their property. Steve stated and then confirmed by Melvin Elkins, a member of Dawndale Baptist Church that in their by-laws is the stipulation that should the church ever cease to exist the property would revert back to the GTBA.
Melvin Elkins then commented on how the Lord has worked in the church to enable them to donate the property to the association.
Larry commented that we still have to petition the city council for a special use permit and that if that were to be denied we would not accept the gift of property.
The motion passed unanimously. Steve spoke in regards to the faith of that church and a round of applause was given on their behalf.
Motion #2 was then presented (see attachment), T. J. Bordelon seconded the motion. Question was asked if it was a local architect who would be hired. An architect has not yet been hired but there is a possibility that the BGCT would provide one at no fee and we would like to use whatever free resources are available. The concern about the builder was raised because a local builder would know what types of design are best for this area. It was noted that a local contractor is on the Construction Feasibility Team and would surely be knowledgeable of these issues. The motion passed.
Linda Sticker asked that we have a special prayer for the special use permit request that it would pass without any problems. Joe Worley led in prayer.
Joe called for New Business of which there was none.
Larry gave brief instructions regarding the surveys placed on the tables in the dinning area by Milford Minatrea. Joe Worley then read a leadership prayer and then dismissed the business meeting in prayer and we were then served lunch by Southside Baptist Church.
Respectfully Submitted,
Yvonne McBryde
Clerk
